Bangor Public Library Facts

Founded:
The Bangor Public Library was officially established in 1883 when the city accepted a generous gift from the estate of the Honorable Samuel F. Hersey. The actual collection of the books that helped establish the library dated back to 1830.

Mission:
The generous gift from the estate of the Honorable Samuel F. Hersey which helped establish the Bangor Public Library was to be used “for the promotion of education, and the health and good morals of citizens.”

Facilities:
Construction began on the current Bangor Public library building in June of 1912 after the great fire of 1911 destroyed the previous facility.

Library Hours:
Monday - Thursday, 9 AM to 8 PM
Friday & Saturday, 9 AM to 5 PM
Closed Sunday

Summer Hours
Monday - Thursday, 9 AM to 7 PM
Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM
Closed Saturday and Sunday
